Mobile Data Offload

As a market leading provider of Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) solutions, GENBAND offers a rich suite of Mobile Data Offload solutions to support service providers as they tackle the exponential growth of mobile data consumption driven by the increase in smart phones and intelligent wireless devices.

Over the past few years smartphones have exposed consumers to mobile internet and rich data services such as mobile video. With the unprecedented growth in new mobile data applications as well as subscribers’ appetites for them, mobile networks are seeing significant network congestion not only due to the increase in the number mobile broadband consumers, but also the usage per customer.

There are various technologies that the operators are leveraging to alleviate network traffic congestion. Wi-Fi and Femtocells are two of the leading key technologies for offload.

The 3GPP I-WLAN standard offers a compelling technology solution for integrating Wi-Fi networks with cellular networks and offloading mobile data traffic. The IWLAN standard provides two modes of interworking, namely Tunnel Termination Gateways (TTG) and Packet Data Gateways (PDG). Termination Gateways (TTG) can be used to access value-add operators’ hosted services from the Wi-Fi domain. Packet Data Gateways (PDG), on the other hand, offload internet traffic without accessing the operator’s core. Both modes are capable of applying service-based local policy for enforcing QoS.

For Wi-Fi based offload solutions, GENBAND’s S-Series Security Gateways can be configured as I-WLAN Tunnel Termination and Packet Data Gateways that work in conjunction with AAA servers and policy controllers to provide intelligent control of data and multimedia traffic. In addition, data session continuity and mobility is provided through support for MOBIKE and Mobile IP.

In addition to I-WLAN based offload solutions, operators are also using Generic Access Network (GAN), pre-Iuh and Iuh femtocell standards-based mobile data offload solutions. In these solutions, mobile data is typically offloaded at the Wi-Fi access points or femtocells. Operator hosted services can be accessed securely via Femto Gateways and GAN Network Controllers and Gateways residing within the operator’s core network.

GENBAND’s S-Series Security Gateways and G9 Converged Gateways support Generic Access Network (GAN), pre-Iuh and Iuh femtocell standards-based data offload solutions simultaneously, providing operators maximum deployment flexibility.

Benefits

The S2 and S9 Security Gateways
  • Support multiple mobile data offload options – pre-Iuh and Iuh Femto Security Gateways, GAN Security Gateways, TTG’s and PDG’s
  • Highly scalable for even the largest femtocell deployments up to 1.2 million tunnels per platform
  • Speed and simplify deployments by providing security, user authentication, IP connectivity management, secure tunnel management, accounting, and policy enforcement
  • Securely transport voice, multimedia and data traffic between the access points and the mobile core
  • Monitor connections for IP intrusion and attacks, discard malformed and Denial of Service (DoS) packets, filter and firewall control protocols, and enforce Quality of Service (QoS)
  • Support seamless Mobile Data Handoff through Mobile IP and MOBIKE technologies.
  • Interoperability with multiple access points, IPsec clients on Wi-Fi devices, AAA servers and policy controllers
  • Comply with standards-based interfaces defined for 3GPP, UMA/GAN, I-WLAN, TD-SCDMA and CDMA networks

The G9 Converged Gateway
  • Enables IP access traffic to traverse into the mobile core by providing media and signaling adaptation
  • Enables interworking into multiple 3GPP core networks
  • Complies with 3GPP, IETF and ITU-T standard interfaces to the access network and mobile core such as Iuh, GAN and Iu.
  • Consolidates and concentrates access points to facilitate connections into the mobile core
  • Provides powerful media plane capabilities such as multiplexing for access bandwidth management
  • Provides powerful media plane mobility capabilities such as access point handovers
  • Provides interworking of GAN to the mobile core with significant media adaptation capabilities including Transcoder Free Operation (TrFO) and numerous codecs and framing types
