The CEO CORNER: STAY TUNED
Charlie Vogt, President and CEO of GENBAND

While 2009 was a tumultuous and financially challenging year for many industries around the world, including the technology sector, GENBAND maintained its year-over-year sales performance, recorded its best financial performance in Q4 and was profitable for the year.

We achieved several key milestones in 2009, including reaching 75 million gateway ports shipped, maintaining our gateway market-share leadership position for the third consecutive year and our TL9000 certification for the sixth consecutive year. We introduced IMS Transcoding which is being deployed by several service providers, including a US-based Tier I operator. We also introduced the S9™ - the industry’s most scalable, ATCA-based SBC platform. In addition to the introduction of the S9, we added more than 40 new access and interconnect SBC features and achieved five 9s performance. GENBAND was also recognized by Synergy Research as being the #1 media gateway company for the calendar year 2009, based on both ports and revenue.

We aim to maintain our leadership position and in this pursuit, GENBAND continues to progress with our three-year product plan, investing significant research and development into new and innovative IP solutions. Today, GENBAND touts one of the industry’s most comprehensive call control and gateway portfolios, consisting of the C3™ Call Control/MGCF, G2™ and G6® Universal Access/Trunking Media Gateways, G9™ High Density Converged Media Gateway, S3™ and S9 Session Border Controllers, S2™ and S9 Security Gateways and the GenView™ Universal Element Management System. Our products and solutions are focused in three primary areas: MoIP (Multimedia over IP), Fixed Mobile Convergence and Security.

As service providers begin to rollout fixed mobile convergence solutions, the advent of WiMax and Femtocell network architectures are taking center stage for many global operators. GENBAND has been investing in WiMax and Femtocell media and security gateway technology for several years. Working closely with several leading system integration partners, our G9 Converged Gateway and S2 Security Gateway are being deployed in several Tier I global networks including SFR which was announced in December. We estimate that more than half of the femtocell field trials underway use our G9 Converged Gateway and S2 Security Gateway. We expanded our global reach in 2009, adding to our sales and support resources in virtually every region.

Our growth was recognized last year in the form of numerous awards: Inc. 500 named GENBAND one of the fastest-growing private companies in North America for the third consecutive year; the Dallas 100 ranked us 6th among the fastest growing companies headquartered in Dallas, and among all public and private technology companies in North America, Deloitte listed GENBAND as the 63rd fastest growing company.

GENBAND’s growth over the past five years is attributed to our vision, focus and go-to-market strategy. Our culture is built upon a thriving entrepreneurial and winning spirit, and continues to be driven by innovation, imagination and execution. At every level, we share an unwavering commitment to be a trusted business partner to each and every one of our customers. Going forward we remain focused on the network migration to IP.

The bar and expectations are set high at GENBAND, as we aim to transform the landscape of fixed and mobile networks and continually exceed our customer and business partner expectations. We look forward to the numerous possibilities that lie ahead.

Stay tuned.

Wholesale Interconnect IPX

Every network operator interconnects its voice traffic with other networks, and this interconnect traffic can come from many sources including other fixed and mobile operators, intra-company divisions, wholesale partners, and peering exchanges. Operators typically use Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) for interconnections, though these TDM networks no longer meet all of today’s needs. The volume and complexity of interconnect traffic has grown substantially due to increasing migration to Voice over IP in both fixed line and mobile voice core networks, challenging operators to simultaneously manage both TDM minutes and SIP/VoIP minutes across national and international backbones.

These factors are driving a radical shift in operators’ interconnect models. Operators are seeking to reduce transaction costs by capping or replacing their legacy TDM networks. They are also being challenged to improve scale, enhance QoS, reduce the number of components and operational complexity, and efficiently handle both fixed and mobile interconnect traffic.

GENBAND offers an Interconnect Solution that enables the seamless any-to-any interconnection of fixed and mobile traffic between any IP or TDM network. This end-to-end, standards-based solution utilizes GENBAND’s rich portfolio of IP media and session border control platforms to reduce costs, expand markets, and interwork with the growing volume of peering and managed interconnect services such as the GSM Association’s IP eXchange (IPX).

SFR recently announced the launch of femtocells for the wireless mass market in France. They join several other Tier 1 mobile operators such as Sprint and Verizon Wireless in North America, and Vodafone in Europe who have already launched Femtocell service to address the need for better wireless coverage in the home.

GENBAND is playing a very active role in the femtocell market across UMTS, CDMA and IMS/IP technologies with two products that form essential parts of the femtocell gateway. GENBAND’s market leading G9 Converged Gateway provides the essential media and signaling adaptation required to bridge femtocell traffic into the mobile core, while the S2 Security Gateway delivers the vital security tunnels necessary to protect the network. Through its complete product portfolio, GENBAND plays a key role in several live Femtocell deployments around the world.
