Market Focus:   Arbinet’s Members include some of the world’s largest fixed line, mobile, wholesale and VoIP carriers as well as calling card, ISPs and content providers around the world who buy and sell voice and IP telecommunications capacity and content.

Market Challenge:  Arbinet provides significant value to service providers by creating a global clearinghouse for the routing of voice calls to their destinations via the least cost path.  Members submit bid and buy orders on a Web trading site, and Arbinet's transaction engine matches up a “limit order” that details maximum price and minimum quality of service with sell orders.  The company developed an advanced Service Control Platform (SCP) that reflected real-time bid report updates from the underlying network providers, as well as associated route changes.  Their challenge was to find a next generation switching platform that could handle the extremely high capacity of calls and complex routing requirements.  The new platform was required to adjust to the ever changing route information – to ensure that their Members were able to complete calls at the lowest cost – on a call-by-call basis.  This new switching platform would replace their array of older national and international TDM tandem (Class 4) gateways that were not capable of providing these valuable new services.

Why They Chose the GENBAND solution:   Arbinet chose GENBAND because of its ability to offer the high capacity, network-proven Busy Hour Call Attempts (BHCA), advanced routing, and call handling required by Arbinet’s network.  GENBAND’s C3 Gateway Controller accommodates the complex call models required by Arbinet’s sophisticated arbitrage system.  On a typical call, the C3 interacts with Arbinet’s SCPs to determine the least cost route to the final destination, which may require multiple TCAP lookups for completion, particularly if insufficient resources exist on a low cost route.  Calls average about 6 TCAP lookups – a tremendous number of transactions showing the throughput and scalability of GENBAND’s solution.

Why They Chose the C3 and G9:  Arbinet receives the sophisticated call routing and services from GENBAND’s C3 Signaling Controller, which provides media gateway control and signaling interworking, including multiple international signaling and protocol variants like SS7/C7, SIGTRAN, PRI, H.323, and SIP.  GENBAND’s high capacity, carrier class G9 family of media gateways provides the media adaptation between the various TDM and VoIP networks.

Business Case / Deployment Benefits:   GENBAND’s solution has been in service since 2001 and carries millions of calls and billions of minutes of traffic per year.  The C3 and G9 platforms eliminated the high cost, maintenance-intensive TDM tandem and international switches.  In addition, customized options were developed for Arbinet’s needs, like crank-back or alternative routing upon adverse network conditions, enabling Arbinet to use complex route lists with multiple route choices and multiple trunk groups or bundles.  Arbinet is also able to expand its reach into new markets and easily accommodate growth in existing markets, adding customers faster and more efficiently.

Customer Benefits:   Arbinet’s Members benefit from GENBAND’s advanced routing solution, enjoying low cost routing options for terminating their voice traffic.  In addition, most customers are able to receive their calling services directly from the C3/G9, thereby reducing the need for separate application servers or user licenses.
